Pre-Conference Workshops

Thursday, October 23, 2008

9:00am – 5:00pm at RCA

Program Certification – Instructor Dr. Pete Brannan, Rockdale Career Academy

This workshop is provided for three groups of technology education teachers:

Ø      those who have applied and received approval for initial program certification through the Georgia Department of Education,

Ø       those who have already achieved program certification and seek their required annual renewal to maintain their program certification status, and

Ø       those who desire to apply for program certification in the near future.

Ø      Proper organization, preparation, documentation, and presentation of required information and materials are imperative for the successful completion of this year-long process.  Get a detailed overview and essential guidance from one of the first teachers to complete the certification process.

Teaching the Engineering Design Process using Consumer Products – Instructor Dr. John Mativo, University of Georgia

An outline of the Engineering Design Process will be made available to participants and each participant will be asked follow the process, recording the steps and results in an Engineering Design Notebook.  Participants will utilize consumer products to gain an understanding of the Engineering Design Process. Participants will need to bring a consumer product that they would like to learn about.  This product can be mechanical or electrical and should be one that will have an impact on society for a long period to come.  It should not be too large - something that can be placed on a table and still have room to work - nothing larger that 12”x12”x12”. Participants will also need to bring along tools for taking the products apart and re-assembling them. Participants will examine how and why it was designed in its current form.  Chances are that everyone will have a different product.  This is good – because the Engineering Design Method will show the similarities in the design process.  At the end of the workshop, participants will compare and contrast how the Engineering Design Process played a part in product development.  Participants will also gain an understanding about why they should utilize the Engineering Design Process and an Engineering Notebook in their classroom.
